It didn’t take Tinker Hatfield much thought to realize that copying the XI in any way, shape or form would be an ill-fated solution to conceptualizing the XII, so he went an entirely different route, relying on thick and rich premium full-grain leathers, as well as thoughtful stitching along the upper reminiscent of the Japanese Army flag from which he drew inspiration. The XII was well received at its launch thanks to the classic “Frozen Moment” commercial that accompanied it. Michael’s dominance over Utah, along with his legendary “Flu Game” performance, surely helped with its mystique and aura as well.
